Police evacuated Terminal 8 around 9:30 p.m. Sunday as a precaution after receiving reports of shots fired near the departures area.

There is “substantial presence” of New York Police Department at the JFK and LaGuardia airports and the investigation “continues”, said the Port Authority, which manages the city’s airports.

According to the flight tracking company, FlightAware, all inbound flights were held at their origin at until 23:30 “due to security”.

As of Monday morning, there are no reported injuries or arrests related to the evacuation.

A statement from the Port Authority confirmed there were no gunshots. By 11:55 p.m., Special Ops had tweeted that “It appears that no shots have been fired”. The terminal was evacuated out of an abudance [sic.] of caution.

People ran, others dove for cover in the panic. “Travelers should contact their carriers”. “I told a group I was with that we could climb the fence and get out of the area”, he wrote.

Videos and photos showed people cowering behind chairs and running across a road to escape the evacuated terminals, but investigators determined there were no guns or ammunition involved at the NY airport. No one was injured and authorities found no firearms, ammunition, shell casings or other evidence of gunfire. Police say more than 20 people subsequently called 911.

After false reports of shots fired at JFK Airport brought travel there to a halt and forced hundreds to be evacuated, among the theories of what caused that chaos is an especially jubilant crowd watching the Olympics.
