Fans line up to pay final respects at Gordie Howe public visitation
As a young player with the Philadelphia Flyers, Tocchet remembers meeting Mr. Hockey. Hall of Fame jockey Sandy Hawley did just that on Friday night.

With apologies to Maurice Richard, that player was “Mr. Hockey”, Gordie Howe, the exceptionally rugged, skilled and seemingly ageless farm boy from Floral, Saskatchewan, whose career spanned six decades and became an inspiration for numerous NHLers who followed.
Hawley answered the question by singing.
MINUS: It’s example #4639 in how you can’t shake a reputation once you get it: Justin Schultz.
He’s actually got a pretty good voice.as far as athletes go.
It’s something that came by reputation, because Howe only managed two Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in his career.
Snapp was sporting Howe’s No. 9 Detroit Vipers jersey from his one-game stint as a 69-year-old forward during the 1997-98 International Hockey League season, his sixth decade of professional hockey, and he proudly recalled how he used to deliver Howe’s mail in suburban Detroit. He was absolutely awesome.
“It was one of the great honors of my life”, Gretzky said. “Gordie Howe was ambidextrous”. “In my mind, he was the king of hockey and he was also a prince of man”.
Those qualities certainly were on display for Rutherford’s inaugural National Hockey League appearance in his native southern Ontario.
“I don’t know. Hey, Gordie Howe, he’s not called Mr. Hockey for nothing”. Next, they evaluate the United States’ first-place group stage finish in Copa America, Brazil’s elimination from the tournament, and the merits of replay in soccer. “I wouldn’t have missed this opportunity to see him one more time for anything in the world”. “He may have been the most well-rounded athletic player that I’ve ever seen”. “He was ideal. If you were going to make a mold of a player, you would want to make it of Gordie”.
Gretzky and No. 4 Bobby Orr may have revolutionized the game but Gordie was a superstar before the term was invented and didn’t go about reinventing anything, he just played the game the way it was supposed to be played – while racking up MVP awards and scoring titles and Stanley Cups.
The term “Gordie Howe hat trick”, consisting of a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game, was coined in reference to the powerful right wing’s reputation for never backing away from a scuffle.
“He’s the nicest man I ever met”, said Gretzky, his voice cracking with emotion.
“He was so gracious, he signed it to, ‘The Hawleys”. “Anything having to do with Gordie Howe, you’re just humbled”. “And it’s an wonderful picture, it’s a picture of him going behind the net, picking up the puck, and it’s an old-time picture with the old wooden boards, everybody in the stands dressed to the hilt”.

I’ve seen and done a multitude of wonderful things in my life so far, but I believe that this moment will always take the cake. Even at the age of 10, I knew that this was a special moment. Trainer Mike Doyle, who won the Oaks in 1989 with Blondeinamotel, will send out the talented trio of Tiz Imaginary, Crumlin Spirit and Dublin Diva.
