FANTASY PLAYS: Less chaos, but plenty to learn from openers

The Chiefs sacked and pressured Rivers just three times, which was good enough this week but won’t be against a better team. And the numbers would have looked even better had he not dropped a long pass at the end of the first half.

Chiefs fans can expect to see veteran TE Antonio Gates, QB Phillip Rivers, and newly acquired WR Travis Benjamin try to give the Chargers an upset win on the road. The Houston Texans should be a tougher opponent than the Chargers.

At that point, the game had a feel of inevitability.

Fourth quarter: The Chiefs scored 23 points, produced 167 offensive yards, allowed 49 yards and gave up three points. And ultimately, their ability to rally in the fourth quarter showed just how potent they can be once things start clicking.

The Chiefs kept chipping away at the lead.

Smith proceeded to lead his team to three straight scores, including a nifty 19-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin and Spencer Ware’s tying touchdown run with just over a minute to go.

The Chiefs beat a much-improved (and finally healthy) San Diego team despite playing an atrocious first half.

This was really the first point when watching that a Kansas City comeback was possible.

Allen, who missed the second half of last season with a lacerated kidney suffered in Baltimore, had six receptions for 63 yards before departing Sunday. The Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs are all capable of going very deep in the NFL Playoffs this year. Since Coach Reid’s arrival in KC, he has garnered three consecutive winning seasons, and to make it four in the parity driven National Football League, the Chiefs will have to win games such as the one they face on Sunday against a Division rival at home.

San Diego never even got a chance in overtime.

Charges wide receive Keenan Allen was hurt on Sunday agains the Chiefs.

Former Oklahoma State running back Tyreek Hill scored a touchdown during the Kansas City Chief’s furious comeback win this past Sunday. Now Lambo is a good young kicker and will make plenty of those in his career but what does it say to your team that you have more confidence in making a 54-yard kick than you do in getting two yards with the running back you drafted specifically to get those tough yards for you and a big offensive line that was having a truly stellar afternoon? We saw numerous same maladies that plagued the Chargers last season: Timid play calling, poor clock management, mental mistakes and shoddy special teams play.

The Chargers host Jacksonville (0-1) on Sunday. A lot can happen in just one game with a limited sample of carries, but that type of efficiency is remarkable. He missed half of last season as well. Ware continued his preseason knack for catching passes, as he caught seven passes for 129 yards, including a 45-yarder.

Tyrell Williams hauled in two of five targets for 71 yards for the Chargers, who suffered a deflating overtime loss to the Chiefs.

The most sought-after running back – and possibly any player at any position – is going to be Tevin Coleman this week.
