There was a point where it seemed inevitable that David De Gea would move back to his homeland to join La Liga giants Real Madrid but Mourinho’s arrival has ended any speculation over his future and it looks nearly certain that the Spanish worldwide will continue to be United’s No.1.

Mkhitaryan told the club’s website, www.manutd.com: “I am very proud to join Manchester United.

“A few years later, we’re back together so I’m happy with that and I know what he can bring to us”.

Whilst interested in making another addition to his squad, Mourinho also appears keen to sell two players who featured prominently under his predecessor Van Gaal. “I can say that I am where I want to be; I want to be in this club, I want to be in this country, in the Premier League and the domestic cups”.

Mkhitaryan becomes United’s third acquisition of this summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Eric Bailly from Villarreal and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Paris Saint-Germain.

While some remain on holiday or on global duty, Mourinho has had an opportunity to see some of the individuals at his disposal next season up close, and according to The Sun, he has testing plans ahead for them.

“We decided four targets”, the Portuguese said.

He added: “I was looking forward to being here and working here”.

Mourinho is a known admirer of fullback Luke Shaw, who needs to prove he has retained his sharpness after last season’s double leg break but, up front, Rashford and Rooney know they face a fight to play alongside Ibrahimovic.

“He is a real team player with great skill, vision and also has a good eye for goal”, Mourinho said of the 27-year-old Mkhitaryan. “But the process will obviously take weeks and weeks and weeks, sometimes years and years, as we always have the chance to improve”.

He scored 41 goals and made 49 assists in 140 games for Dortmund and last season was voted the Bundesliga players’ player of the year, but it has not been an entirely smooth ride.
