Prosecutors say 26-year-old Chelsea Martinez traveled to Faribault to meet 39-year-old Jason Nisbit to talk about suicide on July 31.

They both parked in the beach parking lot and walked across Minnesota 60 and continued walking for about 10 to 15 minutes before reaching a wooded area known by Nisbit and chosen because there was access to water in case he had to wash anything off.

Nisbit is charged with second-degree murder and is being held in Rice County jail.

According to the criminal complaint, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office looked into who had interacted with her online under the name “DarkRyd3r”, and connected the username to Nisbit. Jason Nisbit was arrested Friday at their Faribault home where he lives with his wife and parents. Nisbit was located and led authorities to the body of the mother of three children, who are 4, 6 and 8.

“They’re portraying my husband as a monster and he’s not”, Gina Nisbit said. Her husband provided the information to Columbus police. Martinez was reported missing on August 1st.

During an interview with police, Nisbit admitted to killing Martinez and showed them where he placed her body.

“It’s where you can go to explore, any kind of curiosity, and kind of out of the norm type of thing”, Gina Nisbit said.

Police found Martinez’s abandoned vehicle in the park a few days later and contacted her family.

Oscar Martinez, Chelsea’s husband, says the last time he spoke to his wife, before she disappeared, she told him she was headed to work.

“The only way I believe it would have happened would be if he was forced into giving her assistance in some way”, she said.

Authorities say Nisbit tied up Martinez’s hands and feet, strangled her until she passed out, and then cut her throat. He’ll be back in court later this month.

Bail was set at $1 million during Nisbit’s initial court appearance Monday.
