In reaction to billionaire developer and USA presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call for “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States”, former Vancouver city planner Brent Toderian says the Trump name should not be part of our city’s skyline. The Ward 22 councillor announced his opposition to the luxury hotel and residence’s moniker on Twitter Tuesday morning.

“It seems like every time Donald Trump opens his mouth, he conjures up a more hateful and inflammatory comment that all decent people who believe in celebrating diversity and being respectful need to push back on”, Matlow said. Let us know in the comments.

“Donald Trump is no longer simply a silly clown who’s getting into fights with Rosie O’Donnell”, he added. He’s not hosting a TV show. He’s one of the leading candidates for the presidency of the United States. “So what he says matters”.

Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto is owned by Talon International Development Inc., a privately-held real estate development company based in Toronto, Canada, and other hotel investors and residential condominium owners.

In a statement, the owners of Toronto’s Trump International Hotel and Tower Toronto stressed Trump doesn’t own the Hogtown hotel.

“At one point it was actually a very attractive brand”, Matlow said of the Trump name. He wouldn’t provide any more details.

“I commented that, given the comments Mr. Trump had said just yesterday about Muslims, it just reinforced my sort of feeling that we should start a commentary, a discourse, about removing Trump’s name from the second-tallest building in Vancouver”, said Toderian.

The question of whether Trump could be categorized as fascist has been discussed widely in recent days.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Politics defines fascism as a “right-wing nationalist ideology” with a totalitarian political structure.

Republicans, Democrats, and other world leaders have denounced the statements.

Do you think Toronto should ditch the Trump moniker?

“I’m joining, I’m sure, many people around the world by taking a stand against intolerance and hatred”.

Toronto councillor Josh Matlow believes Donald Trump’s rhetoric and proposed policies as a U.S. presidential candidate make him a “fascist” whose name has no place on a Toronto landmark
