Fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan makes NYFW history with haute hijabs
As New York Fashion Week wraps up, fans are buzzing about one show in particular: Anniesa Hasibuan, who sent all her models down the runway in hijabs. Models wore flowing pants and skirts in silk, lace and chiffon in an array of pastel colours. All that and more was apparent in her colorful and bold collection.

She was widely praised for featuring hijab-covered models and many saw it as way to both glamourize and de-stigmatize what is often regarded as an antiquated and anti-feminist article of clothing. But this time, it was a designer who stole the limelight and broke the internet with her first-of-its-kind collection.
She presented 38 ready-to-wear pieces and 10 couture gowns.
Her first debut on a big runway was in London, which is one of the four fashion capitals in the world.
She wrote on Instagram: ‘Thank you so much for supporting me and D’JAKARTA, my latest design for NYFW The Show, Spring/Summer Collection 2017, see you next year at NYFW, Inshaallah [God willing]’. The young designer reportedly received a standing ovation after the show. “I did not realize the result can be this awesome, and I am thrilled and humbled by the welcome reaction given”.
The 28-year-old showcased attractive and innovative hijab designs which have also made it to the ramp at London in 2015 and she also participated in the NY Couture Fashion Week twice and won the Best Designer award once. Across the catwalk shows, around 125,000 people are estimated to attend the shows while another 2 million watch online via live streams.
