But many royal fans were waiting for Will and Kate to visit the Taj Mahal, where they sat at the famous “Diana bench”, named after the prince’s late mother, Princess Diana. Prince William will make another significant memory when he will be invited along with Kate Middleton by Bhargava to sign on the same page in the Taj Mahal’s visitor book where the Prince’s mother signed nearly 24 years ago.

Diana’s time at the monument to enduring love was tinged with sadness as she was photographed sitting alone on a marble bench signalling the gulf between her and the Prince of Wales.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have evoked the memory of Princess Diana, by sitting on the Taj Mahal bench that became a symbol of her broken marriage.

Summing up the Cambridges’ seven-day tour of India and Bhutan which ended on Saturday, a Kensington Palace spokesman said: “I think it’s a huge success”.

Kate wore sunglasses and a royal blue dress by Indian-American designer Naeem Khan – a brand she has not been spotted in before.

Throughout the trip, Kate’s attire was closely watched and many suggested she, and Prince William, looked stunning. While the young royals appeared to enjoy every minute of their tour, a new report claims that the Duchess might be pregnant with her third child as she was seen cradling her stomach during a reception at Bhutan.

The royal couple, who will celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary on April 29, were guided by an Archaeological Survey of India official as they took a stroll around the mausoleum built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Kate said: “It’s been really incredible learning about the romance of the building, it’s a really attractive building”. The stretch from Amar Vilas hotel to the eastern gate of the Taj Mahal was spruced up and tourists at the western gate were held back for an hour.
