Two NJ Transit buses collided in Newark early Friday morning, killing one of the drivers and injuring passengers, officials said.

The driver of one of the buses was killed, the Newark Police Department told ABC’s NY affiliate WABC.

Photos from the scene show one of the buses appears to have “t-boned” the other, splitting the second bus almost in half.

Many passengers were entangled in twisted metal seats covered in shards of glass as the force of the crash tipped the occupied bus at a 30-degree angle as it came to rest on a median.

The mayor would not comment on reports that Barthelus, who was driving an empty bus, sped through the intersection against a red light.

“We believe all of those passengers will be OK”, said Trucillo.

She and a co-worker brought ice water, rags and a first aid kit, she said.

Garcia’s daughter told NJ.com that her mother was headed to her job at a factory when the crash occurred around 6 a.m.at a downtown intersection. About 17 of the 20 passengers on board were injured, Snyder said.

The junction where the crash occurred was the first in the state to have a surveillance camera to catch drivers running red lights.

Officials in Newark and other towns claimed the red light cameras reduced accidents.

Petrain says she saw people with head and leg injuries.

Investigators have said they are examining the bus and area cameras and interviewing witnesses and passengers. Then-Mayor Cory Booker conducted a demonstration in which he purposely rode through a red light.
