A campaign of stabbings, shootings and car-rammings by Palestinians in recent months has killed 19 Israelis and a US citizen. At least 120 Palestinians have died by Israeli fire in the same period, including 82 said by Israel to be attackers.
According to figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry, Thursday’s deaths bring the total number of Palestinians shot dead by Israeli forces since October 1 to 134, including 26 minors and six women.
“A Palestinian armed with a screwdriver approached a checkpoint near Hebron and attempted to stab security forces”, the Israeli military said in a statement.
Israeli settlements are deemed illegal under global law because they are built on Palestinian territories that are occupied by Israel. Palestinians say they are protesting Israel’s ongoing occupation and Jewish settler incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound – the third holiest site for Muslims as well as the site of an ancient Jewish temple -in East Jerusalem. The report said the people were friends of the suspects in the arson on the Palestinian home in July.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the video “horrifying”, saying it showed “the real face of a group that represents a danger to Israeli society and Israeli security”.
Video from the scene showed police cordoning off the area and debris scattered along the stone walls around where investigators were examining evidence.

Azam himself was recruited by Hamas in Gaza “to set up a military infrastructure that would carry out bombing attacks against Israeli targets”, the intelligence agency stated.
