Federal prosecutors said they were considering charges over the bombings that wounded 29 people.
“Now that we have this suspect in custody, the investigation can focus on other aspects”, New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill said, “such as whether this individual acted alone, and what his motivations may have been”. Charges for his alleged involvement in the bombings have not yet been announced. He declined to provide details about the evidence, citing the ongoing investigation.
These are among the questions that have emerged in the wake of the capture of the man suspected of planting bombs in NY and New Jersey over the weekend, the report said. Sources say they believe he is.
He was questioned every time he returned to the United States, as is standard procedure, but was not on the radar as someone who might have been radicalised.
Officials said they have no other suspects at large but cautioned they are still investigating. Quetta is considered a stronghold of the Taliban. CBS News has learned Rahami has traveled to Afghanistan at least three times – perhaps as recently as 2014 – and visited Pakistan on at least one of those trips.
Nor were Afghan intelligence officials aware of either Rahami or his family, said Mohammad Masoom Stanekzai, director-general of the Afghan National Directorate of Security. Rahami was not initially cooperative with police who tried to interview him, a law enforcement official said.
These sources say that his wife left the United States last week. The family filed a lawsuit against the city in 2011, alleging anti-Muslim discrimination. The United States said it was prepared to extend the truce deal and Russian Federation – after blaming rebels for the violations – suggested it could still be salvaged. Maria, who’s full name is being kept confidential, says she hasn’t heard from Rahami in two years. She was told she would need a visa for the baby as well.
Rahami is still undergoing treatment at Newark’s University Hospital. The congressman doesn’t know what happened after that. ICRC President Peter Maurer said the attack was a “flagrant violation of worldwide humanitarian law” and “totally unacceptable”. He brought the family to the US from his native Afghanistan in 1995, opening up a fried chicken shop some years later.
That’s because the start of the race, set for 9 a.m., was delayed when officials discovered an unattended backpack – which had no connection to Rahami. The family has a history of clashes with the community over the restaurant, which used to be open 24 hours a day, Bollwage added. Investigators searched the building on Monday, the mayor said. The bar owner alerted the local police department.
Surveillance video shows Ahmad Rahami dragging a bag moments before Saturday night’s explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.
The Associated Press To neighbors and customers of his family’s storefront chicken takeout, Ahmad Khan Rahami was a friendly, quiet presence behind the counter who liked talking about cars and was generous with free food.
How did authorities find him?
Security has been stepped up across NY after bomb explosions in New Jersey and NY and expolisves were found planted in the city. Bains said that he saw CNN’s broadcast about Rahami on his laptop and recognized the suspect’s face.

The chase ended when Rahami was shot multiple times.
