“After long thought and detailed analysis I have come to the conclusion that it is in this situation the best possible decision to step down as head coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach”, the Swiss said in his personal statement.

“It was an unforgettable time here in Monchengladbach, as I was able to lead the club from near relegation into the Champions League”, said the 57-year-old. “There were a lot of unbelievable, exhilarating moments”.

“Jurgen won’t become new coach of Borussia Monchengladbach”, Kosicke said. They also face Manchester City and Juventus in Group D. That’s the best decision for both the club and the team.

After being such a rousing success in the Bundesliga last season, this one hasn’t started so well for Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The club initially rejected Favre’s offer to resign, but the coach pushed ahead and announced he was quitting.

His announcement came after a day of talks with club bosses, who had tried to convince him to stay on.

“His public resignation created a situation that hits us to the core”.

Favre was a beloved figure among the fanbase after leading the team to a surprising third-place finish in the Bundesliga last season, but the unrest was palpable after a terrifyingly poor start to this season. ESPN FC’s Gabriele Marcotti sees him as a fixer, even comparing the 57-year-old to The Wolf from Pulp Fiction, and don’t be shocked if a top team decides to give the Swiss manager a chance once January has passed.
