As the investigation into the San Bernardino mass shooting continues, attention seems to be centering on Tashfeen Malik, the Pakistani woman who participated in the rampage with husband Syed Farook.
Malik had posted to Facebook a pledge of allegiance to ISIS leader al-Baghdadi, three US officials familiar with the investigation said.
The attorney general also said that while the couple’s stockpile of pipe bomb components, ammunition and firearms has stoked suspicion that they may have eyed other targets, authorities have so far found no evidence that other assaults were planned.
“We’re going to have to start looking at people very closely because we can’t allow this to happen to our country”, Trump said.
Investigators believe the weapons cache collected by Tashfeen Malik, 29, and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, points to more attacks but they do not have evidence on other possible targets, a senior U.S. government source revealed/ The couple stormed a gathering of his work colleagues in San Bernardino, California, on Wednesday, opening fire with assault-style rifles and killing 14 people. The couple were gunned down by police after they had killed 14 people.
If the rampage is proved to be terrorism, it would be the deadliest attack by Islamic extremists on American soil since 9/11.
The lawyers on Friday described the 27-year-old as “just a housewife” who was quiet like her husband and strictly followed Muslim custom. “None of our family members in Pakistan know Arabic, so we do not know what she used to discuss”. Malik arrived in the U.S.in 2014 on a Pakistani passport and a fiancee visa but had spent extended periods of time in Saudi Arabia.
Farook was born in Chicago to Pakistani parents and raised in California. The couple died in a shootout with authorities the same day.
The Saudi Interior Ministry confirmed Sunday to The Associated Press that Malik’s father – Gulzar Ahmed Malik – has been a resident in the kingdom since the early 1980s. It was not immediately clear whether she graduated.
A maid who worked in the Multan home where Malik lived said Malik initially wore a scarf that covered her head but not her face.
“(The President) will reiterate his firm conviction that ISIL will be destroyed and that the United States must draw upon our values – our unwavering commitment to justice, equality and freedom – to prevail over terrorist groups that use violence to advance a destructive ideology”, the White House said.
The two officials were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. “We have to look at them tough”, he said. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki told The Associated Press authorities there have received no indication Tashfeen Malik was radicalized in Saudi Arabia.
“I recently heard it from relatives that she has become a religious person and she often tells people to live according to the teachings of Islam”, said Batool, 35, a private school teacher who lives in Karor Lal Esam, about 450 kilometers (280 miles) southwest of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.
Similarly, U.S. officials said Farook had been in contact with extremists via social media, but one official said those contacts were not recent and did not involve any significant players on the FBI’s radar. It was unclear if the English version was claiming them as members, or why there was an inconsistency.
Malik’s uncle, Javed Rabbani, said in an interview with Reuters that the family was “in shock”. They cautioned against rushing to judgment on their motivations.
“I’m nervous”, said Fernandino Rodriguez, 39.
An Islamic State-affiliated news service called the two San Bernardino terror attack suspects “supporters” of their Islamist cause, but the group did not claim responsibility for the mass shooting.
