FBI Takes Five People Into Custody Connected To New York City Bombing
The driver, MD Alam, had just picked up three passengers and was driving along 23rd Street when the explosion occurred, shattering the car’s windows and leaving gaping holes in the rear passenger-side door. “I think it’s always wiser to wait until you have information before making conclusions”, she said.

AFP reporters saw a massive police presence at the crime scene, where they were joined by Federal Bureau of Investigation and counter-terrorism squads, as police helicopters circled overhead and sirens wailed.
“I must tell you that just before I got off the plane a bomb went off in NY and nobody knows what’s going on”, Trump said. Twenty-nine people were injured in that blast. They’ve all since been released from hospitals.
The New York Police Department tweeted early Sunday that the device has been safely removed from West 27th Street by the bomb squad. It was taken to be examined by bomb technicians at a police facility in the Bronx.
The New York City explosion startled residents, and could be heard and felt blocks away.
The suspicious item “looks a lot like the homemade bomb that was used during the Boston Marathon attack”, as NPR’s Dina Temple-Raston reported on Weekend Edition Sunday.
Beck says Los Angeles police are constantly assessing security threat levels in the wake Saturday’s two explosions.
Investigators are still waiting for the results of forensics tests to reveal more details about the NY explosion, the senior law enforcement official said.
Law enforcement officials told the Associated Press that at least 5 men were being questioned.
Public officials were tight-lipped on the cause of the blast, saying it was still under investigation but confirmed it had not been a gas leak. The FBI detained five suspects that could have a connection to the September 17 bombing that injured 29 people. Authorities are still working to determine whether the two devices are linked. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said it didn’t appear to be linked to global terrorism.
NEW YORK (AP) – Agents with the FBI pulled over a auto on a highway in Brooklyn on Sunday night and were questioning the vehicle’s occupants in connection with the investigation into the New York City bombing that injured 29 people, authorities said.
Police have not said what, if any, forensic evidence they’ve collected from that device.
The assailant was a “soldier of the Islamic State”, the militant group said on Sunday. He did call the NY incident a “bombing” before official confirmation and said the USA needed to “get tough”, but that was hardly comparable to his jarring comments on Orlando.
United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told VOA that officials assess security needs inside the United Nations complex on a daily basis. The host city of the world body is already on high alert to guarantee the security of visiting heads of state or government.
“We know there was a bombing”, in the city last night, the mayor said. Investigators believe the blast was caused by an explosive device in or near a dumpster, a law enforcement source told CNN. The probes remain “separate investigations”, the FBI and officials in NY said.
The explosion shook the bustling neighborhood Saturday night in what police are calling “an act of terrorism”.
After landing in White Plains, New York, a noticeably tired-looking Clinton told reporters she had been ‘briefed about the bombings in New York and New Jersey and the attacks in Minnesota’.
Officials said the explosive in that device appeared to be black powder. And I was looking all around as I usually do in NY; there’s always something to see – street fashion, an overlooked Art Nouveau carving or just a particularly spectacular rat.
Authorities know the bombing was intentional, violent and criminal, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
Caldwell reported from Washington.
No worldwide militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the NY blast or a pipe bomb that went off earlier along the route of a Saturday road race in suburban New Jersey. “We don’t know yet”, de Blasio said.
Witnesses described hearing a deafening blast, and surveillance video footage captured images of nearby windows being blown out by the explosion as people sprinted away from the scene.
While all 29 people who were injured in the NY bombing have been released from medical care, three of those hurt in Minnesota remain in hospital, officials said. He said the second device appeared “similar in design” to the first, but did not provide details.
Authorities say there was no structural damage from the blast.
The unexploded second device – reportedly a pressure cooker attached to wiring and a mobile phone – was found four blocks from the site of the explosion, and NY governor Andrew Cuomo said it appeared to be “similar in design” to the exploded device.
On “Fox News Sunday”, Christie said an explosion in a trash can when a 5K charity foot race was about to start in Seaside Park, N.J., was “clearly an act of terrorism; we just don’t know who was responsible”. Investigators discovered a pressure cooker with wiring protruding from it a few blocks away. Most of the injuries were minor.
The additional troops were deployed “out of an abundance of caution”, the governor’s office said.
New Yorkers will see an increased police presence around the city, de Blasio said.
The blast hit around 8:30 p.m. (0030 GMT Sunday) on 23rd Street, a block lacking any obvious political targets.

“Almost anybody could have fabricated these bombs and used cellphones as timed detonators”, said another USA official familiar with the inquiry.
