If the New England Revolution’s disappointing 2016 season had a glimmer of hope and pride, it was the club’s drive to the US Open Cup Final.
Agudelo brought the Revs within two with his second goal of the night in the 73rd minute – securing the first brace of his U.S. Open Cup career – but the Revs couldn’t find two more goals over the last 17 minutes. But Urruti countered in the 15th minute, and FC Dallas scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half for a 3-1 advantage.
FC Dallas would take the lead for good in the 40th minute on a goal from Matt Hedges and eight minutes later Mauro Diaz would score on a penalty kick to put Dallas up 3-1. Matt Hedges went to challenge Juan Agudelo for the ball and the crafty forward turned Hedges and powered a shot past Chris Seitz for the game’s first goal.
And the game dramatically shifted late in the first half, with Hedges nodding home one Diaz set piece before drawing a penalty against Jose Goncalves on another.
FC Dallas’ 19-year trophy drought is over.
Dallas came close in the 32nd minute to taking the lead on a wonderful give and go between Kellyn Acosta and Ryan Hollingshead on the right side. A corner kick was cleared out of the box but remained in the possession of the home side. A minute later, Koffie sustained a right leg injury and was replaced by striker Kei Kamara. Koffie’s departure prompted the inclusion of Chris Tierney, whose unsafe crossing played a part in the second half, even if he did not pick up an assist.
Urruti then had a goal disallowed for offside off a free kick, and headed off the back post off a Tesho Akindele feed.

The former Ghana youth worldwide provided the assist for Juan Agudelo to open the scoring in the sixth minute. Substitute Teal Bunbury sent a left-footer wide off an Agudelo layoff.
