FCA recalling 1.9 million vehicles for air bag defect

Because of an air bag defect that is linked to three deaths and five injuries, on Thursday Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said it is recalling 1.9 million vehicles worldwide. “Fiat Chrysler says it is recalling the following vehicles; 2010 Sebring mid-size auto, 2011-2014 Chrysler 200’s, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber’s, the Dodge Avenger’s from 2010-2014, and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot and Compass SUVs”, CNBC’s Phil LeBeau reported on Thursday afternoon’s “Closing Bell”.

Most of the Fiat Chrysler cars being recalled are in the U.S., but 224,860 were sold in Canada and Mexico and 284,051 were sold outside North America.

With Fiat Chrysler’s latest recall, the company indicated the issue hampering air-bag and seat-belt pretensioner deployment has occurred in frontal collisions with the affected vehicles.

Fiat Chrysler says the occupant restraint controllers and wire routing design are no longer used in its new vehicles.

At issue is a potentially flawed module that controls the system, and it wiring.

In August, NHTSA said it was upgrading and expanding a probe of more than 8 million air bag inflators made by ARC Automotive Inc after a driver was killed in Canada when an inflator ruptured in a Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) vehicle. The problem is believed to have resulted in three deaths and five injuries.
