They say costs associated with the regulations will make it hard to stay in business.

“We owe it to ourselves to do better”.

“Ending the tobacco epidemic is more urgent than ever, and can only happen if the FDA acts aggressively and broadly to protect all Americans from all tobacco products”, said Harold Wimmer, president of the American Lung Association. But they have a narrow window until Aug 2 to file a petition with the state, get it approved, gather 366,000 valid signatures and turn them in to county clerks.

The Food and Drug Administration will now treat electronic cigarettes and related tobacco products such as hookahs and cigars the same as traditional cigarettes.

“Vaping” has become an alarming trend in recent years. While the regulations have been long awaited, they have the potential to upend a multi-million dollar industry. Now if it’s a different nicotine level, than that’s a different product.

The change also means that makers of e-cigarettes will have to provide the FDA with ingredient lists, will have to register their businesses, and will have to subject their advertising claims for review. “We can not let the enormous progress that we have made toward a tobacco-free generation be undermined by products that impact health and economy in this way”, said Sylvia Burwell, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

While some studies suggest switching to e-cigarettes can help reduce unhealthy side-effects in regular cigarette smokers, other research points out that e-cigarettes aren’t very effective in getting people to quit smoking. While federal law doesn’t now have an age requirement for e-cigarettes, IN does.

“I think it’s good” Chanthavong said.

Jensen has been working in the vaping business for years.

The Irvington shop sells every e-cigarette accessory the FDA will now be able to regulate, including liquids, atomizers, batteries and flavors.

Strang said, “There is no one in the industry, I would say, that is against regulating what’s in these products”.

“These are jobs paying people’s bills, feeding people’s children and to have that suddenly just yanked out from under you…it’s a tough thing”, Copper said.
