While Vulture critic Margaret Lyons unfavourably compared the power and effectiveness of the premiere for The Walking Dead in comparison to the melodrama of its spin-off. The Walking Dead has referred to the undead as walkers, roamers, lurkers, geeks, or biters, but Fear the Walking Dead is using a moniker inspired by a 2002 film that successfully reinvented the zombie genre.
