Fears of ‘third intifada’ in Middle East
In one step meant to calm tensions, Netanyahu has barred members of parliament and ministers from visiting the Old City’s Al-Aqsa compound, which has seen repeated clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian youths in recent weeks.

Two Israelis were assaulted within about an hour of each other Thursday, authorities said.
Two Israelis were lightly injured and one Palestinian killed in stabbing attacks in Jerusalem and the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba.
The suspect, who used a screwdriver, was shot dead by another soldier, said police, who identified him as Thaer Abu Ghazaleh, in his late teens.
On Monday, Abdel Rahman Abdullah, a 13-year-old from the Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem, was shot and killed by Israeli forces, prompting further protests and unrest.
Netanyahu said the spate of attacks was “unorganized, but all are the result of wild and false incitement” about Israeli intentions at Al-Aqsa.
And the violence has spread beyond Jerusalem and the West Bank, the historical hot spots.
Another Palestinian was shot dead by security forces later in Tel Aviv when he wounded a female Israel Defense Forces soldier and another Israeli.
A statement said sirens were triggered in Israeli communities near the border but the rocket landed in open countryside and no-one was hurt.
Muslim men under the age of 50 will be prevented from attending prayers at what they call the Noble Sanctuary. Police said she had tried to stab a security guard.
Frequent protests and clashes have occurred there in the last few months.
These attacks follow several days of violent incidents. The proper response, he said, was to “bring about the liquidation of the terrorist stabber or attacker, the stone-thrower and the like, immediately and on the spot”.
In a separate incident, a Palestinian man stabbed a 25-year-old Yeshiva student in occupied East Jerusalem. He told Channel 10 TV that two of the victims worked for City Hall, and that passers-by rushed to help the wounded Arabs and provide first aid.
Meanwhile, violence continues to climb in Israel and the West Bank as clashes broke out overnight in Arab towns across the country in solidarity with Palestinians.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians also work in Israel, particularly in construction. Video of the arrests of at least two Palestinians showed uniformed Israeli soldiers and plainclothes men beating the detainees.

Palestinians complain that the new rules of engagement discriminate against them, as the same measures are not taken against Israeli settlers who throw stones at Palestinians. Israel’s military says the soldiers responded with warning shots before opening fire on the crowd. Israeli security forces are still looking for that attacker.
