Federal Bureau of Investigation detains 5 over NY bombing

Cuomo stressed it’s still early in the investigation, but law enforcement officials so far have not found any immediate links to terrorist groups, such as the Islamic State. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation by name and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Hillary Clinton says she has been briefed “about the bombings in NY and New Jersey and the attack in Minnesota”.

NY is especially busy with hundreds of world leaders and dignitaries visiting this week for the U.N. General Assembly.

Two men found a package with wires and a pipe coming out of it, the Mayor of Elizabeth, Christian Bollwage, said.

Police recovered video from both scenes in Manhattan including images of the explosion itself, New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill said.

Police are expected to give a briefing on the explosion later today. “Be vigilant at this point in time, not just because of this incident, be vigilant because we’re going into United Nations General Assembly week”.

“We felt it. We heard it”, Gonzalez said.

The blast in front of 135 W. 23rd St. between Sixth and Seventh avenues was called “an act of terrorism” by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Investigators were probing possible links between the attacks, which came as world leaders begin converging on NY for the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

He added that security outside the U.N.is the responsibility of the host country.

The Democratic governor said the preliminary investigation didn’t appear to show a link to global terror, and he noted that no terror group had taken credit for it.

The discovery of the suspicious package comes a day after an explosion in Manhattan injured 29 people, and an unexploded pressure-cooker device was found four blocks away.

The explosion on a commercial and residential street in New York City’s Chelsea district on Saturday night sent a deafening roar and a powerful shock wave through several blocks, wounding people with shrapnel and flying glass.

Authorities questioned several people early Monday after a vehicle stop in New York City as they worked to determine if there is a connection between several incidents involving explosive devices in two days.

Another device was found in the region but it had failed to detonate.

“We’re going to be very careful and patient to get to the full truth here”, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said there was “more work to do” before authorities could say what the motivation was for the attack on the area known for its vibrant arts scene and large gay community.

“Was it a political motivation, a personal motivation”.

What we don’t know: Much of NYPD’s response Saturday night involved bolstering its public safety presence.

The governor added that while no global group had claimed responsibility for planting the explosive device, any bomb exploding in NY was terrorism “generically”.

Three of the nine victims were hospitalized, one with life-threatening injures, local police said on Sunday at a news conference.

The city will also see an increased bag search and canine activities throughout the mass transit systems, said city officials.

Bill de Blasio, the city’s mayor, refused to speculate on a possible motive, saying only that it was an “intentional act” and that investigators – who included members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a special anti-terrorism taskforce – were working tirelessly to find those responsible.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who’s also chairman of Trump’s transition team, said on CNN that “if you look at a number of these incidents, you can call them whatever you want”.
