Criminal complaints in Manhattan and New Jersey federal courts provided chilling descriptions of what authorities say drove the Afghan-born USA citizen to set off explosives in NY and New Jersey, including a bomb that injured over two dozen people when it blew up on a busy Manhattan street.
However, ABC News reported Tuesday that in 2014, Rahami’s father, an immigrant from Afghanistan, had told the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2014 that his son was interacting with “bad people” overseas, according to sources.
Federal prosecutors have charged Ahmad Khan Rahami with planting a series of bombs in NY and New Jersey, including one that injured 31 people when it blew up on a busy street.
An explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood of NY on Saturday, September 17, 2016.
Ahmad Khan Rahami, the suspect in the New York-New Jersey bomb plot, has been charged with five counts of attempted murder.
Lynch spoke Wednesday at an International Bar Association conference.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Rahami will be moved to NY to face federal charges in the “near future”. “We have reason to believe this was an act of terror”, he said of the bombing investigation.
Police investigating the bombings in NY and New Jersey have been saying for several days they were looking for the men, who they stressed were being sought as potential witnesses in the case, not as suspects.
“Because this is an ongoing investigation, all New Yorkers should remain vigilant”, he said.
Surveillance video apparently shows the 28-year-old dragging a bag, moments before an explosion in Manhattan’s Chelsea district on Saturday night.
A judge approved a visitation agreement between the two in May 2014, ordering that the child spend Christmas and Thanksgiving with the mother and the Muslim holy days Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha with Rahami.
Ahmad Khan Rahami was arrested for stabbing a person in the leg and possession of a firearm in 2014. “He loved his Civics, he loved going fast”, said Ryan McCann, a frequent customer at First American Fried Chicken, the restaurant that Rahami’s father, Mohammed Rahami, has run since 2002.
Prosecutors say they are still considering charges over those bombings.
Following Rahami’s arrest, officials said they had no indication there were more bombs or suspects to find, though they are still investigating.
As police searched for Ahmad Rahami on Monday, the owner of a bar in Linden found a man sleeping in his hallway. The agency says the men were seen Saturday night removing the bomb from a piece of luggage, then leaving the device behind while taking the suitcase. Authorities say his head was grazed by bullet or shrapnel as the officers exchanged gunfire with suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami.
AP spokesman Paul Colford said the AP told law enforcement officials about Rahami’s work at the Cranbury facility. One device was detonated by a bomb disposal robot, an official previously told PEOPLE.
Investigators were searching on Tuesday for clues to the motive behind the bombings and attempted bombings in NY and New Jersey over the weekend and to determine whether the Afghanistan-born suspect had accomplices or was radicalised overseas. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
