It is one year later.

The past year has become a whirlwind of activism for the Garner family, who attend and speak at rallies and candlelight vigils in commemoration of other victims of police violence.

Sharpton said the settlement to the family was deserved but didn’t resolve the larger questions around policing and minorities. “People he met and came across, he really showed love in the neighborhood”.

“You’re seeing efforts by people to bring Ferguson-style investigations of their own community policing to bear so that they’re able to have benchmarks to try to improve the quality of police-community relations”, Williams told CBC News on Saturday. The “hands up, don’t shoot” mantra that came out of the ensuing demonstrations was built on a lie, according to a Department of Justice report. A civil jury holds a person responsible under what’s called a preponderance of the evidence standard – the lowest standard of proof necessary – where an aggrieved party must convince a jury it is simply more likely than not that they should prevail. As the officers attempted to arrest him, Officer Daniel Pantaleo placed him in an illegal chokehold, which was captured on witness video.

The New York Daily News called the settlement a “measure of the only justice that may be available” to the family and called the amount a “reasonable recognition” of the family’s loss, saying that the family would have “no doubt” won in a civil trial. In addition to organizing a march in Staten Island on Monday, NYC Shut It Down staged surprise banner drops at two different locations this week, “to remind people that one year had passed without any legal consequences for Garner’s killer or changes to the policies that led to Garner’s death”. “He said, “Oh, that sounds good.’ And I said, ‘Anything sounds good to you, fat boy, ‘ because that was my nickname for him””. One trainee who was on scene for Garner’s treatment past year is no longer with the hospital, the spokesman said. Over time, their cries of “I can’t breathe” morphed into “Black Lives Matter” as each new video added to the evidence of unequal justice faced by young men and boys of color.

An affidavit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court last month stated that Pantaleo said that he is receiving getting death threats and had surveillance cameras and a panic button installed inside his home in order to better protect himself.
