Up For Debate had imposed a July 31 deadline for the leaders to respond to the invitation, and, at that time, neither the Conservative Party nor the Bloc Québécois had replied to the invitation.
“The debate format will avoid canned speeches, providing the leaders with the opportunity to engage with each other”, the magazine said in a news release.
The economy is expected to be front and centre, as it has dominated the first few days of the campaign, but the debate will also touch on energy, the environment, democracy, foreign policy and security.
“I can tell you absolutely that Saskatchewan is a battleground in this election“, said John Tzupa, NDP regional campaign manager for Saskatchewan.
The Toronto debate is to air on the Metropolis-TV community, Omni stations and CPAC, in addition to a sequence of AM radio stations.
According to Ms. Kennell, the signs will be centered around three main themes: ending violence against women, ending women’s economic inequality, and supporting women’s leadership and organizations.
Thursday’s debate comes less than a week after Harper sparked the 11-week election campaign.
Ahead of the debate, Maclean’s broke down what to watch for as the leaders battle it out on the podium.
The coalition of groups, calling themselves “Up for Debate”, is an alliance of more than 175 women’s organizations across Canada and says it is trying to raise awareness about women’s rights in the 2015 election.
“Young parents renovated rooms as nurseries, empty-nesters converted rooms for other uses, older Canadians made changes to remain independent in their own homes”, Harper said. He only took over as party leader in March 2012, after the death of his predecessor, Jack Layton, who had led the party into the last election in 2011.
“He’s basically been on the receiving end of attack ads and that’s why his personal support is soft now”, said Nik Nanos, an Ottawa-based pollster at Nanos Research Group.
Different debates are deliberate.
“I am not afraid to stand up to Stephen Harper”, Mulcair said.
The economy has not performed as well as Harper claims.
There will be a lot of rehearsing going on today by Canada’s four major political party leaders.

Instead of the traditional pair of televised debates sponsored by a consortium of broadcasters, there will be a series of at least four debates during the campaign sponsored by a variety of sources.
