Meanwhile, former rivals John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg have been named as the captains of the World Team and the European Team respectively. Each player will take the court once or twice for singles, with at least four of the six taking part in doubles. “It’s a great feeling not facing the big forehand”, said Federer, who attended the launch despite injury ruling him out of the US Open which starts in NY on Monday.
But they also reflected on their Olympic experiences and their thoughts on the Rio 2016 Games. Argentine Juan Martin del Potro and Canadian Milos Raonic are likely to lead the Rest of the World team. Makarova won her second-round match Tuesday.
“In a way it’s painful, just because I love this place”, Federer said, “and it’s hard watching the Olympics I would have loved to have competed there as well”.
Maybe Roger Federer could play the Olympics and skip the U.S. Open.
“It’s gonna be very special to be on a team with Roger”.
“Ultimately Rod Laver was my idol growing up, and I tried to emulate him and play like him”.
Federer missed the entire 2016 season due to a knee surgery. While with his family, Federer twisted his knee and suffered a torn meniscus. But I was very happy with the way that I competed in Rio. But he still managed to follow all the action in Brazil, even finding himself enamored with a sport other than his own.
“I’m doing well and training as much as possible”, Federer said. “I guess it depends on when you tune in, what event is on”.
A duo of Nadal and Federer instantly brings credibility to the Laver Cup, both as an important event and a must-see one for fans. I need a few more days of practice here, which I’m really confident that are going to help me. “I’ll never be the player who will wait for the (opponent’s) mistake”.
Back in NY, site of five of his titles, Federer said he watched a lot of volleyball during the Olympics and spoke to Andy Murray after the Brit won gold.
“Novak is the favorite”, Federer said (via Tennis.com). Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish it off against Murray, but he deserved it.
The quietly spoken and modest Laver has 11 singles Majors of his own, along with many more in doubles, and would have had a lot more had the tennis tour not split into professional and amateur branches during the 1960s when the Australian was at his peak.
