Federer and Williams sisters return to Wimbledon quarters

He will face either Canada’s Milos Raonic or David Goffin of Belgium for a place in the semi-finals.

If Federer prevails, he will then face either U.S. 28th seed Sam Querrey, the conqueror of Novak Djokovic in the third round, or sixth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic.

Marin Cilic of Croatia returns to Kei Nishikori of Japan during their men’s singles match on day eight of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, Monday, July 4, 2016.

Andy Murray expects his latest duel with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga tomorrow to come down to who wins just a few pivotal points.

For Murray the ultimate trick would be to get overexcited about Djokovic’s departure from the draw and end up making a mess of a golden opportunity to win a second Wimbledon title.

Andy Murray will continue the “boring” task of keeping his focus on his next opponent and away from what might happen on Sunday. ‘ Honestly, because I had some bad days at the beginning of the season and to play quarter-final here at Wimbledon is good for me.’ In order to make it thus far in the tournament, attractive Tsonga had to overcome tough third-round encounter over American John Isner in tough five sets, where Tsonga pulled out a narrow 19-17 win in the decider.

That would also be an understatement. Hes tied with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw with seven.

Any modern great has a greater task to accomplish in a Grand Slam as the surfaces are more varied – blue Plexicushion since 2008 at the Australian Open, clay in Paris, grass in London and acrylic hard court in NY.

Murray played solidly, closing with an ace on his third match point, and setting up a quarterfinal matchup with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Tomas Berdych faces Lucas Pouille after that match, with play on both courts starting at 1pm.

When the scoreboard inside Centre Court flashed the result of Sam Querrey’s shocking win over Novak Djokovic on Saturday, a murmur rippled through the crowd that eventually turned into a roar.

Nishikori was trailing 6-1, 5-1 when he made a decision to follow the advice of his coach Michael Chang, who could be heard saying “Don’t push it, it’s not worth it”.

It will be their first meeting since Cilic stunned Federer at the 2014 US Open to set up the shock Grand Slam final between himself and Nishikori; it was the first major final not to involve any of tennis’ so-called “Big Four” (Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray) since the 2005 Australian Open.

Cilic ended up winning his first major title at that tournament in NY.

MURRAY VS. TSONGA: Tsonga has twice reached the Wimbledon semifinals, including beating Federer in the 2011 quarterfinals.

After four matches, his record stands at 12 sets contested, 12 sets won. “She has played really well against me in the past and she beat me earlier this year so I know that I had to play really well to win this”, Williams said of the Kuznetsova clash. “If he plays well, I’m not on my game, I can lose that match for sure”, said the second seed.

Kuznetsova, a double Grand Slam victor and three-times Wimbledon quarterfinalist, beat Williams on a hard court at the Miami Open in March.

“I think he (Querrey) must be doing great things”, said Raonic, who recovered from two sets down to reach the quarterfinals.

Querrey beat Raonic at Wimbledon in 2012, when the Canadian was just 21.

BERDYCH VS. POUILLE: Berdych is the only player left in the men’s draw that won’t have a rest day before the quarterfinals.
