Federer overcomes Dimitrov to claim 300th Grand Slam win
Sharapova maintained her push for a second Australian Open title when she beat America’s Lauren Davis, a full foot shorter than the Russian at 5ft 2ins (1.57m), 6-1, 6-7 (5/7), 6-0.

David Goffin of Belgium falls to the court during his third round match against Dominic Thiem of Austria at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Friday, Jan. 22, 2016.
He reached the milestone at Rod Laver Arena yesterday, when he moved into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Grigor Dimitrov.
“When I reached 1000, it was a big deal for me”.
Having celebrated his 1,000th tour win in Brisbane previous year, Federer was tickled by the idea of notching up his 300th in grand slams.
“I wish I could have maybe been tougher when I was younger in practice, but I guess that’s just how it needed to be”. Yeah, so it’s very nice.
Federer is the first male player to reach 300 wins in majors – Jimmy Connors was next-best with 233 and Andre Agassi had 224.
The Czech advanced to the last 16 for the sixth consecutive grand slam where he will face Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, who knocked out 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic in straight sets. She dropped only four games in her first match, three in the second and, aside from an unexpected aberration in the second set against Davis, lost only one today.
Puig kept pace through the first eight games before the fourth-seeded Radwanska was finally able to break her and take the opening set.
“It’s very exciting, I must tell you”, he said. I think if I think about it like that, like, Oh, I’ve been around the block, I’ve been to all these tournaments so many times, that would seem quite heavy, not really motivate me much. “I hope he’s OK”.
The 2004 Wimbledon champion, now 28, said: “Oh wow, I have won 600 matches”.
He committed another 15 errors in the fourth and final set, but on this occasion it was Dimitrov who outdid him in that aspect – and with only 5 winners, was thoroughly outclassed, losing the deciding set 4-6.
She won 6-1 6-7 6-0. But overall it’s not constantly on my mind, how many matches I’ve won in my career.
Federer continued the discussion of his girls in press, saying he didn’t mind if they became tennis stars, though he doesn’t get too excited about another 20 years traveling on the tennis circuit.

“It’s a little odd from time to time, I feel like he picks up the ball on the backhand and the forehand (like me)”, Federer said in a courtside interview. Dimitrov showed a lot of grit, saving three break points throughout the set, never dropping serve to win it 6-3 and even up the match. He’ll next play 2008 Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat fellow Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4). But her first win at the tournament suggests Williams is ready to defend her Australian Open title this year. “I was happy with the way I finished”. Seven doubles matches were later postponed.
