Feds examine how Tesla Autopilot reacts to crossing traffic

All of this comes as more details are emerging about a crash in Montana involving a Model X that reportedly veered off a country road. Musk has defended Autopilot, despite calls for the system to be deactivated by Tesla until an investigation opened by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can be completed.

Tesla Motors’ CEO Elon Musk told the Wall Street Journal he has no plans to disable Tesla’s autopilot feature, and would instead be focusing on consumer education. Musk said Tesla will publish a blog post to explain how Autopilot works, noting that a lot of customers still don’t know what it is or how to enable it.

“Our blog post last week provided the relevant information about this issue”, the spokesperson said, pointing to a Tesla press release on June 30 in which it disclosed the accident for the first time that asserted the May 7 crash didn’t require disclosure to investors.

The Tesla Model X vehicle is test driven at the company’s headquarters.

Recently, safety agency has started an investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot technology.

Montana State Police say the driver was headed from Seattle to Yellowstone National Park when he crashed on a two-lane highway near Cardwell early Saturday morning.

The trooper did not cite the driver, saying he believed any citation would be voided because of the driver’s claim that the vehicle was on Autopilot.

At least three recent accidents, one fatal, have involved drivers using Autopilot, though specifics of how much the drivers were still involved in piloting the cars at the time are not available.

As a safety measure, the company has designed the facility to turn itself off if the driver removed his or her hands from the wheel for more than a brief period.
