Feds give states more time to bolster struggling schools
So, what are charter schools?

Douglas Harris, an economist at Tulane University and director of the Education Research Alliance for New Orleans, believes that the Trump administration will follow through with the school voucher plan.
The American state of Minnesota passed the country’s first charter school law in the early 1990s. As the state embraced and then expanded charters over the past two decades, its rank has fallen on national reading and math tests. While sending certain students off to special institutions may be helpful on a low level, it leaves larger communities without a comprehensive solution to underfunding. The consequences of ignoring the problems with public education will disproportionately affect children from minority and low-income households, the very people who would benefit the most from a well-funded public system. The education activist is from MI, where she worked to influence state education policy and earned a reputation as a “smart, principled small-government conservative who’s experienced in politics and versed in the relevant policy”, according to the New York Times. The group has also pushed so-called “conversion therapy” – discredited practices aimed at changing a person’s sexual orientation – according to the Human Rights Campaign. Private schools tend to deny these kinds of students admission. That’s not in itself unusual, as Jewish nonprofits generally observe the “if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all” rule when it comes to presidential personnel choices. Schools there can do poorly and still continue to enroll students. Charter-school advocates have long insisted that their reform would force underperforming public schools to improve their product or close up shop.
DeVos’ appointment appears to place the site, which is named for the 74 million school-age children in America, in much the same position as Breitbart News, the conservative-news digital operation.
“Public schools are not Sunday schools”, Kary L. Moss, executive director of the ACLU of MI, said in a 2006 statement. There have always been standardized testing in schools, but during that time, when Jeb Bush was governor and he began the FCAT everything seemed to tick up a notch.
The ED, through its sub-agency the Office for Civil Rights, also ensures that discrimination does not occur in schools based on race, gender, sexual orientation, and other characteristics. These parents often have no real choice between schools if they want their children to get the support they require.
DeVos now serves as chairwoman for an advocacy group called the American Federation for Children, a booster of “school choice” legislation, which pushes for vouchers to subsidize the cost of sending kids to private schools. “I can think of no one better to break down bureaucratic barriers, eliminate the institutional intransigence on school choice, and reduce federal costs and interference in the state and local decision-making process”.
As school choice proponents cheered President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Republican donor and philanthropist Betsy DeVos as education secretary Wednesday, it wasn’t clear where she stands on higher education and the rising student loan burden. “There is so much to be celebrated in the civil rights gains made during the Obama Administration”. The groups claim that Harvard and other Ivy League schools use racial quotas that discriminate against Asians in the admissions process. Previously, Reckhow was a high school teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools.
Critics say that teaching intelligent design in schools amounts to an attack on the separation of church and state. Eighty percent of charter schools in MI are run by for-profit entities, and majority perform below the state average. Some charter schools do a better job than others do.
It’s interesting to know that DeVos has never taken any role in public education but has been active in working for choices of school.

Another point, Valant adds, is that one of the hopes of charter school founders was to de-segregate American schools.
