Female-directed films rule a weekend box office topped by ‘Spectre,’ ‘Peanuts’
With those two top spots, the rest of the box office for the weekend dropped off by wide margins.

LOS ANGELES, United States-The new James Bond movie “Spectre” stayed atop the North American box office in its second week in theaters, bringing in $33.7 million, industry figures showed Monday.
The latest Bond movie also overcame Jurassic World to become the top movie in the United Kingdom for 2015. The action ranges from a spectacular opening in Mexico City featuring one of the most ambitious single takes – though I doubt it really is – I’ve ever seen in ANY film to an outrageous Austrian snow chase to a hidden villain’s lair recalling the lairs of villains past.
What movie did you catch this weekend?
Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the US and Canada this weekend were “The 33” (5.8 million dollars), “Goosebumps” (4.7 million), “Bridge Of Spies” (4.3 million), “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” (2.4 million), “Hotel Transylvania 2” (2.4 million) and “The Last Witch Hunter” (1.5 million). “The Peanuts Movie” has grossed $82.5 million thus far. The overall worldwide weekend hauled in an estimated $152.6M from 91 markets pushing the offshore total to $413.1M (including $121M from the U.K.) and the global gross to $543.8M on its way to a possible billion.
Elsewhere The Weinstein Company looks like it’s pulling out any hope for “Burnt” (it dropped a whopping -60.3%) and despite four weeks of limited release and being on 496 screens “Suffragette” is still not posting impressive limited release numbers.

Ticket sales saw a 49% decline from last weekend’s $73 million opening, which itself was down 21% compared to the 2012 opening of “Skyfall”, but the film still finished a healthy margin ahead of second place finisher “The Peanuts Movie”, which earned $24.2 million, also in its second week. It now stands at $18.5M off of its $24M budget. CBS’ “Love the Coopers” fared best with $8.4 million from 2,600 screens, but Warner Bros. From 2,603 locations, ‘Love the Coopers’ pulled in an estimated $8.4 million. However, because it’s the only Christmas-themed family movie opening this year (I don’t count “Krampus” or “The Night Before” as vying for the same audience), its holdover should be a little stronger than expected. Totals are $1.8M and $833,000 respectively.
