A number of Chelsea youth products failed to make an impact at Stamford Bridge under Mourinho, leading to speculation that the likes of Marcus Rashford and Tim Fosu-Mensah could be loaned out rather than continuing to get game-time under the new boss.

Talks started on Tuesday but it took until Friday for the terms of the contract to be ironed out and United to announce the three-year deal, with an option for the 53-year-old to stay at the club until at least 2020.

However, Mourinho is also said to be keen on Oxford and United now believe they can sign the England Under-19 global.
