Condolences and speculations surrounding Seals’ death have flooded the timelines of the Ferguson and social justice community. Ashley Yates, an activist who protested in Ferguson, wrote “Darren King D Seals stood for Mike Brown and is and will always be a part of my Ferguson family”. He also reportedly uploaded a Facebook Live video about his own contentious dealings with the Ferguson Police Department, alleging that officers drew guns on him and his younger brother and warned him to “choose [his] enemies wisely”.

Seals became a figure in the Ferguson protests following the fatal police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson in 2014. Seals described himself on his Twitter profile as a “Businessman, Revolutionary, Activist, Unapologetically BLACK, Afrikan in AmeriKKKa, Fighter, Leader”.

Investigators say Seals had been shot.
