There were no shots fired and no burglaries, looting or property damage during the protest along West Florissant Avenue, county police spokesman Shawn McGuire said. Tyrone Harris Jr. was shot late Sunday after police say he opened fire on an unmarked police van.

Tyrone Harris Sr said two girls who were with his son told him the 18-year-old was unarmed.

The shooting happened as protesters nearby were marking the anniversary of 18-year-old Michael Brown’s police shooting death.

Stenger added that the ability of officers to maintain order is why the state of emergency will continue “for at least the next 24 hours”.

On Monday night, no smoke or tear gas was used and no police or civilians reported injuries. But the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks radical hate groups, stated Oath Keepers was a “fiercely anti-government, militaristic group”.

Police said that around 150 people have been arrested in and around Ferguson over the last three days, some for throwing rocks and bottles at officers, others for trying to block a highway and for staging a sit-in outside the federal courthouse in St. Louis.

Oath Keepers previously showed up in Ferguson in November after a grand jury declined to indict former Ferguson officer Darren Wilson in Brown’s death, saying they stationed themselves along several downtown rooftops to protect businesses from rioting and looters.

The St Louis County police chief condemned their appearance in Ferguson.

Heavily armed members of a group known as the Oath Keepers arrive in Ferguson, Mo., early Tuesday.

Harris was in critical condition after surgery.

“We don’t want to lose all that we’ve gained”, said County Executive Steve Stenger. Brian Schellman says officers made no arrests during the protest.

She criticized members of the group for taking the spotlight away from the real issues of racial inequality that the protests were trying to draw attention to.

Events marking the anniversary of Brown’s death had been peaceful until Sunday night, when the gunfire rang out and Tyrone Harris Jr. was shot.

“After a year of protest and conversation around police accountability, having plainclothes officers without body cameras and proper identification in the protest setting leaves us with only the officer’s account of the incident, which is clearly problematic”, said Kayla Reed, a field organizer with the Organization for Black Struggle, in a statement on Monday.
