Elsewhere, Queen dedicated “Under Pressure”, a song they recorded with Bowie, to the “Starman” hitmaker, who passed away in January at the age of 69 following a secret battle with cancer.

Saturday afternoon then saw thousands flock to the main stage in their masks, before Jack Whitehall invited everyone to sing-along with “Heroes”, “Rebel Rebel” and “All The Young Dudes”, as clips of Bowie’s final ever United Kingdom live performance from Isle Of Wight Festival in 2004 were shown on the big screens.
The tribute began with a message from comedian Jack Whitehall and involved festival-goers singing along to Heroes, Rebel Rebel and All The Young Dudes.
The masks were sold to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer charity. In it, he described him as a “true friend to the festival”.
Kemp said: “It was nerve-wracking!”
Still buzzing from the news that Ash & Ice has become the band’s highest charting album, The Kills thrilled the Main Stage audience with their effortlessly cool style and compelling stage presence.
Tributes to Bowie are being planned at festivals across the United Kingdom this summer, with the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival being decorated with a giant metal lightning bolt in homage to his Aladdin Sane album cover.
They ended with a string of their well-known tunes including Pinball Wizard and Baba O’Riley before ending on Won’t Get Fooled Again.
Backstage, the first tasting was held for The Who’s own-brand of Champagne called Cuvee Roger Daltrey, selling at £95 a bottle, which has been produced to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary.
