Dozens of dogs and cats were killed when a fire engulfed an animal shelter in Paxton, Mass., emergency officials said.

Owner Dick Clark told The Landmark that he was notified by police and a dispatcher about the blaze and headed over to his business from his Rutland home.
Of those, only five of the dogs were saved.
In a Facebook message posted after the fire was over, the shelter wrote, “Tonight, Sweetpea has lost nearly everything”.
Sweetpea reported that as of this morning, dogs Brooklyn Skye, Jade and Divinci are at vet in stable condition. Stella is in critical condition and rushed to tufts.
While the firefighters were unable to rescue any cats, a staffer said a few may have been able to escape. “You can rebuild the building, but can’t you get back those lives”. A veterinarian arrived, as well as paramedics who began treating the rescued dogs and cats as they were brought to safety.

Sweetpea is described on its website as a nonprofit, no-kill animal welfare organization founded in 2000.
