“Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the airbag electronic control module, a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front airbags, side airbags and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated”, NHTSA said in its recall summary.
Fiat Chrysler found the problem by investigating warranty claims.
Fiat Chrysler said “new ORC modules are being developed for the upgrade”. The SUVs include 284,089 in the US, 13,411 in Canada, 6,277 in Mexico and 48,212 outside North America.
Fiat Chrysler also said it was recalling 275,614 model year 2012-2015 Dodge Journey cross-utility vehicles (CUVs) in the United States to replace a few parts of their anti-lock brake systems (ABS).
Fiat Chrysler has now issued 38 recalls covering 11.4 million vehicles in the United States – a record for the automaker. The replacement parts needed for this remedy are not expected to be available until the early part of 2016. The condition is most often preceded by an instrument-cluster warning light; foundation brake function is unaffected.

The airbags at fault were not supplied by Takata, which faces a major recall after its airbags were tied to eight deaths, according to a statement.
