Fiat Chrysler to investigate crash that killed ‘Star Trek’ actor
Yelchin’s auto was in neutral and still running when his body was discovered, and the coroner’s office has officially ruled his death an accident.

As previously reported, the Star Trek actor died at the age of 27 over the weekend when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled back and pinned him against his brick mailbox pillar and security fence around 1:10 a.m. Though Fiat says there are technically no mechanical problems with the cars, drivers who took their vehicles to be serviced after the recall received a software update that “automatically prevent a vehicle from moving, under certain circumstances, even if the driver fails to select Park”.
Anton Yelchin death on Sunday has left behind a number of upcoming projects big and small with his untimely death.
“We are looking into that”, an LAPD spokesperson told People magazine Monday, referring to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ April recall of the 2014 and 2015 model years. According to investigators, it appears as though Yelchin failed to properly put the vehicle in park, leaving it in neutral as he exited it.
In a statement, the company said: “FCA US extends its most honest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Yelchin”. “The company is in contact with the authorities and is conducting a thorough investigation”. The new transmissions do not make it clear what gear the vehicle is in – so the driver may leave the auto in neutral while thinking it is in park.
“Anton Yelchin was one of my best friends”. NHSA urged the recall, which involved the gear shifters.
The vehicle that fatally struck 27-year-old actor Anton Yelchin outside his Studio City residence over the weekend had been part of a recall due to a potential “rollaway” risk, officials said. The young Actor played a lead role of young Russian starship navigator “Pavel Chekov” in JJ Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot series in 2009.
The recall also includes Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans from the 2012-14 model years.
Director J.J. Abrams, who cast Yelchin in the franchise, wrote in a statement that he was “brilliant. kind. amusing as hell, and supremely talented”.
