But when he was asked about allegations that Putin had stifled and even killed members of the press, here’s what he said. Politkovskaya, a prominent investigative journalist and human rights activist, was killed on October 7, 2006.

Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini were each banned for eight years by the FIFA ethics committee on Monday in a stunning takedown of world football’s most powerful leaders. Blatter and Platini say the payment was completely unconnected with the presidential elections. The FIFA ethics commission’s procedure against me is a true mockery.

The committee’s statement on Platini went on to add: “Mr Platini failed to act with complete credibility and integrity, showing unawareness of the importance of his duties and concomitant obligations and responsibilities”.

Blatter, FIFA’s president since 1998, was fined 50,000 Swiss francs while Platini, the head of UEFA, was fined 80,000 Swiss francs.

The investigation into both men, who denied any wrongdoing, was unable to prove “to the extent required” that either was guilty of bribery and corruption under the FIFA Code of Ethics (FCE).

He continued: “There’s a bit of a kangaroo court feel about some of this, perhaps more relevant for Platini than Blatter because there’s a distinction between the two”.

The pair’s assertions of an oral agreement as the basis for the deal were labelled “not convincing” by the Ethics Committee, which determined they had breached rules on offering and accepting gifts and other benefits and subsequently imposed eight-year bans.

World football’s governing body has been in turmoil for several months, following numerous allegations of corruption.

“We took an early decision to support Mr Platini, we thought he had done a very good job with UEFA, and we were clearly all very disappointed when all this came out”.

“First of all, I was sad, but now I’m not sad”, Blatter said when asked for his reaction to the punishment.

Blatter told the Russian news agency Tass that there had been an agreement for Russia to host 2018 and for the U.S. to stage the 2022 tournament until Michel Platini made a decision to back the eventual winners, Qatar.
