Fifth time’s the Oscar charm for best actor DiCaprio

The “naked dress” trend may be over, but if reaction to Chopras glam take on it is any indication, we could be seeing even more sheerness on starlets in the future. It is her second Oscar win, and she said the fact that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is hoping to change laws around honour killing following the success of her documentary, shows the “power of the film”.

Tell us what you think! It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West’.

Comedian Chris Rock launched his return stint as Oscar host on Sunday by immediately and unabashedly confronting the racially charged elephant in the room – the furor over the all-white field of performers nominated for Hollywood’s highest honors.

“This year, in the In Memoriam package, it’s just going to be black people who were shot by the cops on their way to the movies”. But it ain’t that racist that you’ve grown accustomed to. “You’ve got to go at that the right way”.

While saying that black actors “want opportunity – and not just once”, Rock made a point to note the complexity of the issues of inclusion and discrimination. Chris Rock absolutely nailed that balance in his hilarious opening monologue and with his ensuing quips and barbs throughout the marathon three-and-a-half-hour telecast. Rock himself showed up as a “black astronaut” whom NASA staffers played by Jeff Daniels and Kristen Wiig decided against saving, unlike “Martian” protagonist Mark Watney (Matt Damon).

“Too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematographer”.

One of Rock’s most pointed comments on the subject was not a joke at all but a straightforward summation of the issue: “We want opportunity”. McCarthy’s well-crafted procedural, led by a strong ensemble cast, had lagged in the lead-up to the Oscars, losing ground to the flashier filmmaking of Alejandro Inarritu’s film.

And Rock did a taped bit outside a movie theater in Compton, California, for what he called a “fresh perspective”, interviewing black moviegoers who said they’d never even heard of top-nominated films such as “Spotlight“, “Brooklyn”, “Trumbo” or “Bridge of Spies”. And what can I say?

But for the most part, the audience in the Dolby Theatre seemed to welcome the chance to address the thorny question of diversity in the film industry head-on and to finally release the tension that had built for weeks amid calls for a boycott of the ceremony.

Nominated in six categories, Spotlight also won Best Original Screenplay for the film that uncovers the scandal of almost 90 priests abusing children and young people, and the Church’s attempts to cover it up.

With last night as the expiring icing on a once-sweet cake, the Oscars feels like it has devolved into the kind of joyless and self-abnegating paean to the political that is the polar opposite of entertainment.
