Police say no one else was shot Thursday.
The shooting at the Northlake Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina occurred following an altercation between two groups, according to a police department press release.
During the fight, a weapon was brandished and shots were fired about 2 p.m.at Northlake Mall in Charlotte, Putney said. Police identified the man killed as 18-year-old Daquan Antonio Westbrook.
That officer is now on paid administrative leave, Putney said. They had gotten off the escalator in Macy’s, headed for Victoria’s Secret, when dozens of shoppers – “too many to count”, Williams said – thundered toward them.
Earlier, Medic said one person had a leg injury after an incident at the mall. Aldo employees immediately closed the store gate and went to the back room, Jasmine said.
A shoe store manager in the mall told CNN that the gunfight that prompted an off-duty officer to kill the gunman began when a group of people “ganged up” to attack a man. Police then intervened and shot the person with the gun, local media reported witnesses as saying.
Upon hearing gunfire, an off-duty police officer working as a security guard there said he was basically forced to shoot the suspect because he leveled a gun at him.

“The first thing I did was run to the storage unit, the second thing I did was hide in the storage unit, the third thing, If I had to I would have fought”, she said. “That is part of the investigation”, he said. He said he backed up against a wall and watched as people fled the scene.
