Two F-16 fighter jets from the New Jersey National Guard were tracking the blimp, according to CNN.

An Army blimp broke loose from its mooring at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland around noon and is now being tracked by two US fighter jets, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

The two blimps, which are easily visible in Baltimore city to the northeast on a clear day, are part of a military program to test the JLENS surveillance system with defense contractor Raytheon.

NORAD said it is working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure air traffic safety. The other was meant to carry precision radar to help the military on the ground to pinpoint targets. An untethered JLENS blimp has come loose, and is even now floating aimlessly above the troposphere.

Anyone who sees the aerostat is advised to contact 911 immediately; people are warned to keep a safe distance from the airship and tether as contact with them may present significant danger.

Two F-16 fighter jets were deployed from New Jersey to track the surveillance blimp at about 12.30pm Eastern Time as winds pushed it further north. The structure is traveling at an altitude of about 16,000ft
