Film and Sitcom Legend Garry Marshall Dies at 81

The turn of the century led to Marshall discovering another future Oscar-winning actress in Anne Hathaway, for The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2.

He also began Greg Kinnear’s feature film career in 1996’s Dear God, before going back to Roberts and Richard Gere in 1999’s Runaway Bride.

Along with his many behind-the-camera duties, Marshall was a frequent actor, popping up in everything from the James Bond classic “Goldfinger” to his sister’s “A League of Their Own” to the TV series “Hot in Cleveland”.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Howard remembered the Happy Days’ creators “staggering sense of humor and wisdom” and described Marshall as a “world-class creator, mentor, philosopher and friend”. Actor and NU alum Zach Braff (Communication ’97), who worked with Marshall in the Disney film “Chicken Little”, paid tribute to Marshall in Instagram, calling him a legend.

Other famous works of Garry’s include the shows The Odd Couple and Laverne & Shirley, and the films The Princess Diaries and Overboard. He changed our lives. “Thank you for capturing so much joy on film, over and over”, Robin Williams’ daughter Zelda tweeted.

Kathy Bates said she “adored” working with Marshall, while Jessica Alba called him a “comedic genius” and “a true pioneer”.

In a report by TMZ, Garry was suffering from a stroke and had to go to the hospital and back before his death. My dear friend, Garry Marshall, has passed away.

According to a report by the AP, Marshall, a NY native, once explained in a 1980s interview, that he relied on comedy when he was growing up in the Bronx. “Rest in peace, dear one”, she wrote.

Julie Andrews, also in a statement to THR stated, “I’m devastated to hear of Garry’s passing”.

A private memorial service is being planned for Marshall – who is survived by wife Barbara and three children – around the time of his birthday, 13 November.
