Final Hip concert powerful moment for all Canadians: PM

“This is a massive tour for the Tragically Hip and we wanted to be a part of it and include our fan-base as the tour isn’t coming to Kitchener and lots of people were having difficulty getting tickets”, said Daniel Demois, co-owner of Apollo Cinema.

Canadian rock legends The Tragically Hip are performing in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario on Saturday August 20 and CBC will air the concert live on all of their platforms (television, radio, online) starting at 8:30 pm ET. Trudeau said all week he was wishing he was in Rio for the Olympics, “but tonight I’m glad I’m in Kingston instead”.

He says the concert is a powerful moment for all Canadians.

Tickets for the “Man Machine Poem” tour sold out nearly immediately after they went on sale in June – leaving many fans disappointed they’d miss a final chance to see the Hip live.

The band embarked on what will likely be its final tour after lead singer Gord Downie revealed that he’s battling terminal brain cancer.

When the show started, the Hip mixed fan favourites, newer songs and some politics. “The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration” will be produced by Insight Productions in association with the CBC and Man Machine Poem Touring Inc.

Before “Machine”, Downie launched into one of his trademark onstage rants, calling out to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was in the crowd for the show. “It’s really, really bad, but we’re going to figure it out, you’re going to figure it out”.
