Final US Airways flight begins journey from Philadelphia

The final US Airways flight has landed in Philadelphia, completing the last leg of a roundtrip journey that included a stop in North Carolina.

Flight 1939 – named in honour of the airline’s founding year – landed in Philadelphia at 5.54am on Saturday.

The non-stop, red-eye flight is scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia at 6:18 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.

“We’re joining the world’s largest airlines and it’s gonna be wonderful for passengers, employees and the future of the company”, Rice said.

American parent AMR Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2011 after losing billions in the previous decade.

John and Jacqui Katchur, a couple who met on a US Airways flight, were one of the passengers onboard.

AMR management was initially reluctant, but the two sides announced a deal in February 2013.

American knows stakes are high, said airline analyst Henry Harteveldt, of Atmosphere Research Group.

Customers were able to check-in for flights at self-service kiosks at airports that now say American instead of US Airways.
