‘Finding Dory’ has record-breaking opening weekend
After thirteen years since Finding Nemo captivated the hearts of millions of viewers, Disney and Pixar finally released Finding Dory, which smashed box office records. Yet it is a far different matter at the box office, as the sequel not only almost doubled the opening weekend of Nemo but shattered the all-time opening weekend record for an animated movie. Comedienne and TV mogul, Ellen DeGeneres is back voicing the titular forgetful fish, Dory.

In China, Finding Dory marks Pixar’s biggest debut, with $17.5 million ticket sales, and also biggest Disney/Pixar opening weekend ever in Australia, with $7.6 million.
“It’s a real home run”, said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.’ executive vice president of domestic distribution. “These two comedians are just stars”. When director Andrew Stanton was asked about the couple featured in the trailer, he said: “they can be whatever you want them to be”. The horror movie “The Conjuring 2”, which opened on June 10, placed third, taking in more than $15 million.
Overall, the weekend is down almost 5 percent from past year, when “Inside Out” launched with $90.4 million and “Jurassic World” earned $106.6 million in its second weekend in theaters.
This was still a more respectable fall than Warcraft, as the already struggling and critically panned fantasy plummeted by 73 percent, to a $6.5 million fifth place standing. The film is a sequel to Finding Nemo directed in 2003. A new Pixar movie, especially a well-reviewed one – “Dory” has received mostly good notices from critics – seems to fit that bill.

ComScore estimated that the audience was 62% female. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
