Finding Dory lends life to the rather sedentary North American box office, which has gone sluggish despite the release of high-profile movies like Alice Through the Looking Glass and Warcraft.

ET reports that FINDING DORY took in $136.2 million for its opening weekend, setting a new record for the highest-grossing animated film debut in history. That beats the previous title holder Shrek the Third which in 2007 took in $121.6.

It is also the second-largest June opening of all time, behind Jurassic World.

Central Intelligence, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, earned $34.5m (£23.6m) during its opening weekend. Shatner, who played Captain Kirk on the show, will appear at the convention August 12, when Fenway Park will host a Star Trek 50th Anniversary Night.

In a recent petition requesting Disney run a PSA before the movie stressing the importance of protecting the Blue Tang, creator Kelsey Bourgeois noted that “Finding Dory” has researchers panicking. Tell us what you thought of the film in the comment section below. Add that plot twist following Dory’s enormous effort of crossing the unsafe and massive ocean to search for her family, and it would certainly be rough.

Even some rave reviews from Finding Dory considered it a step down from Finding Nemo. So far, the Universal total production has earned nearly 2.6 billion Yuan ($377.6 million) in local and worldwide receipts combined. Dory is living happily amongst her new clown fish family and their friends until she sets out on a journey to find her home and her parents. China led the way with a $17.5 million (£12m) opening- an impressive statistic, considering that the nation that had a much smaller box-office market in 2003 and therefore had little exposure to Finding Nemo.

Its opening day totaling is an estimated $54.9 million. The movie is yet to release in many other global regions, including France and Spain, which is expected to open coming weekend, before expanding across the globe throughout this year.
