Finding Dory Wins Weekend Box Office, Independence Day: Resurgence Takes Second

Its second week totals overshadowed the release of Independence Day: Resurgence. The sequel to “Finding Nemo” stays atop the chart after breaking a new record with $135.1 million debut last week. It cost $50 million to make but STX’s exposure is under $10 million.

Though it didn’t exactly light the domestic box office aflame, Free State of Jones played best to viewers among the weekend’s new releases, according to CinemaScore tracking. “Resurgence” placed second with revenue of $41.6 million, shy of projections.

Two weeks in, and Finding Dory is already the sixth highest grossing movie of 2016.

Internationally, the Independence Day box office saw openings in 57 markets where it earned $102.1 million including $37.3 million from 6,047 screens in China, and Korea, the United Kingdom and Mexico each bringing in around $7 million each.

Shark thriller The Shallows did well with critics, and it made a strong bid against its $17 million budget with an opening weekend estimate of $16.7 million.

“Central Intelligence” was third at the box office, with $18.4 million.

Even though it had a massive marketing campaign with headliner Matthew McConaughey appearing all over the televison interview shows, “Free State of Jones” only mustered $7.8 million putting it in 5th place.

Central Intelligence, the comedy starring The Rock and Kevin Hart, finished the weekend third earning almost $18.4 million.

Will Smith – who starred in the original Resurgence film – did not return to battle the invaders although Bill Pullman, Vivica Fox and Jeff Goldblum reprised their characters with newcomers Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher coming on board. Meanwhile, the newly released The Neon Demon opened outside of the top 10 with an estimated $606,594.
