Fire closes park’s south entrance, all other entrances open

Yellowstone national park officials tell us fire crews are on alert looking out for fire dangers, to keep tourists safe while visiting the park.

About 50 people have been evacuated from campgrounds and a lodge that rents cabins in the area.

All other park entrances and roads are open.

The road was expected to remain closed Tuesday as firefighters cleared debris and burned trees that might pose a hazard, he said.

Authorities say more than 1,800 homes are threatened by a destructive wildfire that continues to grow on California’s central coast.

The Maple Fire, along with two other fires burning in more remote areas of Yellowstone, were all caused by lightning, and are burning in timber and undergrowth primed by a dry spring and summer. Investigators were seeking the cause of the blaze that broke out a week ago.

A fire burning for a month north of Big Sur grew again to 135 square miles.

More than 400 homes remained threatened by the fire.

Inslee noted that hot and windy weather conditions are forecast for the next seven days.

About 75 homes and other structures are within a half-mile of the fire’s perimeter.

Authorities ordered evacuations east of Thompson Falls after a fire doubled in size to almost 11 square miles.

The flames expanded by almost 10 square miles Sunday.

Despite its being well over a week old, the fire surged with new activity on Monday and threatened to jump the lines that were containing it, though by day’s end containment remained at 35 percent.

The almost 50-square-mile fire in eastern OR near the Idaho state line is now threatening Succor Creek State Park.
