Never before in Anderson’s four-decade career had he been forced to make such a choice. The third was already a professional firefighter who had gone back to school to earn his master’s degree.

The state fire marshal’s office says the fire threatens more than 100 homes and a school. The Okanogan Complex of wildfires, in which three firefighters died on Wednesday, grew by more than 100 square miles and stood at 355 square miles on Saturday morning.

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers says it is too early to say how many homes have been burned by a series of wildfires in the county of 5,300 square miles.

As conditions deteriorated, emergency officials urged the evacuation before dawn Friday of areas on the northwest outskirt of the community of Okanogan, but they didn’t immediately know how many people were affected.

A grateful community has embraced the firefighters, however, with offers of food and water from everyone who recognised their small yet titanic struggle.

Wildfires are burning in five other states in the Western U.S. Here’s a look at the large fires in those states. Thirteen people have died.

US President Barack Obama Friday declared a wildfire emergency in Washington, which will release federal funds to help relief efforts in the state.

Resources were so strained that on Saturday fire officials began providing basic fire training to volunteers who have machinery like backhoes and bulldozers so they can help dig fire lines.

Calling for more funding for forest treatment and fire-prevention, state lands commissioner Peter Goldmark said the forests were unhealthy. “It gets passed down nearly as a summer tradition in a lot of families”.

Despite fears that the fires could spread, firefighters have seen some success in recent days.

The members of the state’s Forest Fire Service are expected to leave over the weekend or early next week.

Anderson’s fire crew did manage to save a couple of homes, including at a Bible camp where they evacuated about 200 children and their chaperones. Three others were killed in the fire. Almost 800 firefighters were trying to beat back the flames.

With roughly 560 firefighters deployed against the fires, crews took advantage of light winds to extend containment lines west of the town center along Lake Chelan in the area of a yacht club and at a nearby ridge, officials said. “We train and practice for that”, he said.

Meanwhile, the dangers associated with wildland firefighting have become tragically evident.

He had been fighting fires for a decade.

Anderson watched the flames cross a road named for his grandfather and counted even more personal losses.

Among the dead was Thomas Zbyszewski, a physics major and actor at Whitman College in southeastern Washington. He was due to return to school next week. I wish it was me. “I used to be coming over a number of occasions a day to examine on it”, Craig stated.

Zajac, 26, was the son of a Methodist minister from Downers Grove, Illinois. In addition to the degree from CWRU, he earned a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in 2014. “I bought my first cow from him”.
