The fire, which broke out before dawn in an empty building that was being decorated, took five hours to bring under control, spokesman Gabriel Plus told AFP.

One of the firefighters was hospitalized with extreme heat exposure while the other suffered light injuries from smoke inhalation, Plus said.

Fire was so fierce that the firefighting teams needed rotations after every 20 minutes at a time. The cause of the fire is unclear.

The fire broke out on the site of a planned shopping mall, costing 110 million euros and to be known as Vill up, which was due to open on 15 October.

It is situated in northeastern Paris in the Parc de Villette. The museum has four cube-shaped buildings.
