Fire official: 2 firefighters killed, 2 hurt in Kansas City

Two firefighters have been killed battling an apartment fire in Kansas City.

When they arrived, they located smoke and fire showing from the building and ordered additional fire crews.

There were also two people trapped inside, but they were rescued, and it’s now unknown if they suffered any injuries. The firefighters were not immediately identified and officials added that two other firefighters were injured in the accident.

“It’s hard when you live with somebody for 24 hours a day, and you’re laughing and joking one minute and then something like this happens in the line of duty”, Berardi said.

The fire crews moved back to what Berardi called a “defensive mode” after the firefighters were hurt.

The department did not immediately release the identities of the firefighters. “Our condolences go out to the loved ones of those who made the ultimate sacrifice today, and we pray for recovery of the injured”, said Kansas City Mayor Sly James.

Lee stood outside the burning building with an oxygen tank he uses because of problems with his lungs.

We are still working to find out what started this fire.

“I was laying down and heard somebody yell, ‘Everybody get out, ‘ ” Lee said.

Officials on scene told KMBC 9 News at least three firefighters were taken to hospitals. One was expected to be released, while the other was to be kept overnight for observation.

Berardi said firefighters were at the hospital consoling the families of the firefighters who died.

Berardi said it was his worst day as Kansas City fire chief.
